The Carbon Cost of AI
How are growing data centres powered, what does that mean for emissions, and what would cleaner electricity or carbon capture cost?
I’m James Walker, a chemical engineering graduate who has recently completed MSc study in Sustainable Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University, with my dissertation result pending. This is a space for my engineering projects, independent research and fundraising.

I’m raising £750+ for Cancer Research UK through fundraising challenges and events, ending with the 2027 Great North Run.
About
I recently completed MSc study in Sustainable Chemical Engineering at Newcastle University, achieving a 76% Distinction-level average across taught modules, with my dissertation result pending. I previously completed a BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering.
I’m particularly interested in water and environmental engineering, process engineering, sustainability and the wider energy transition.
While applying for graduate roles, I’m developing independent research articles and preparing fundraising challenges for Cancer Research UK. Alongside this, I continue to work in hospitality with supervisory responsibilities, supporting colleagues and helping coordinate service.
